One of the key things you should look for is large, well-positioned windows in a house before moving in. Depending on your hemisphere, windows should be properly positioned for sunlight. In Kenya, windows facing north or east let in the most light.
However, avoid overgrown trees that cast shadows on your home.
But why natural light and sun into a home? Can you absorb vitamin D in your house? I will help you understand why large windows and natural light are a must-have, not a good-to-have, in your home.
Your internal clock (Circadian rhythm) controls your sleep patterns, digestion, mental performance (such as concentration and memory retention), and hormone production.
The sun triggers cortisol, a hormone that stimulates peak mental performance and helps you stay away. That is why heavy draperies on the window or poorly lit places undermine your performance.
The sun also stimulates the production of serotonin (a mood and energy hormone). Serotonin keeps you in a better mood, motivates you and brings emotional stability. People struggling with depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) benefit from natural light, which improves their moods and produces better emotions.
Conversely, melatonin is a sleep hormone produced in the dark. Melatonin helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.
The growth hormone, or the repair hormone, is at its peak at night.
The sun emits UV radiation, which helps destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Germs thrive in damp environments. Allowing light to penetrate your house makes it impossible for germs to thrive.
You also get refreshing air because of zero mould in the home. Bathrooms are susceptible to mould, so ensure maximum light penetration.
Important note: Sunlight is not a substitute for disinfecting or cleaning a home. It only highlights hidden dirt and pests.
Cerestory windows are narrow and horizontally placed above eye level. They maximise light absorption while protecting your privacy.
Ideal for: Bathrooms or rooms with limited wall space.
Choose roof windows that are laminated, double or triple-glazed. Also, place other reinforcements in high-risk areas such as grills and bars. The grills and bars may be patterned to make them look protective rather than defensive.
And remember, keep the gaps between the grills and bars small for safety, but not so small that they block light.
Note
Be strategic in choosing where to place your window and the type of window you use. Kenya is near the equator, and the sun rises and sets almost directly overhead.
Mirrors in the east often bring gentle sunlight, mirrors in the north bring consistent sunlight, while mirrors in the west invite harsh sunlight in the afternoon.
Mirrors change the feel and look of a space by:
Create an illusion of light.
When It’s a No-No for Mirror:
No. Outdoor sunlight is best for vitamin D absorption. However, sunlight in the house maximises your performance and mood.
Staying up to date with the latest technology can be overwhelming, as companies continually develop sustainable building solutions. Nevertheless, research the best windows for your location.
Blending the right mirror and strategically placing it helps you maximise the benefits of natural light.
